Their common name comes from both their honey-gold colouring and their sweet, honeylike aroma when fresh. What makes Armillaria truly remarkable isn’t visible above ground—beneath the forest floor stretches one of Earth’s largest living organisms.
The famous honey mushroom colony in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest covers over 2,000 acres (nearly 4 square miles) and may be 2,400–8,650 years old, making it possibly the largest and oldest known living organism on the planet. What appears as separate mushroom clusters scattered across acres of forest are actually all fruiting bodies of a single genetic individual, all connected underground by a vast mycelium network.
Honey mushrooms occupy a complex ecological role as both decomposers and parasites. They break down dead wood, returning nutrients to forest ecosystems, but also infect living trees, causing root rot.
