Five Centuries of Art

What You’ll Discover Inside

Each chapter follows botanical illustration through a distinct historical period — the artists who defined it, the techniques they developed, and the scientific discoveries their work made possible.

1450–1600

Renaissance Herbals

The birth of scientific illustration changed everything. Artists began drawing plants from life for the first time, replacing centuries of copied woodcuts with direct observation. These early works laid the foundation for modern botanical art.

1600–1750

Golden Age Masters

Maria Sibylla Merian and Georg Ehret perfected the craft. Their detailed observations still inspire artists today — work that combined scientific rigour with beauty that has never been surpassed.

1750–1850

The Age of Elegance

Pierre-Joseph Redouté painted for queens and empresses. His roses became symbols of French elegance, and botanical art reached a level of refinement it has never quite matched since.

1850–1900

Victorian Obsession

The Victorians went mad for ferns, orchids, and exotic plants. This era gave us some of the most detailed botanical illustrations ever made — and sparked the houseplant obsession we still live with today.

1900–Today

Modern Scientific Art

Even with photography, botanical illustration remains essential. Artists still capture details that cameras cannot — which is why this ancient art form continues to thrive in the digital age.

Built to Last

The Craft Behind the Book

Creating a beautiful book requires more than beautiful images. It demands attention to every detail. That’s why I chose materials that will last for generations.

The paper matters more than most people realize. Thin, glossy paper looks cheap and feels cheap. Instead, I selected 100 GSM premium matte stock — a weight that lets colours shine without glare, and pages that turn smoothly without sticking together.

“I didn’t want to make a book you’d read once. I wanted to make a book your grandchildren would find in your library.”

The binding uses library-grade case laminate construction — a technique that creates a spine opening flat without cracking, so you can display any spread without damaging the book. Museums use this same binding for their art catalogues.

Every image received individual colour calibration. Because botanical art depends on precise colours, I couldn’t trust automated printing. Each illustration was adjusted by hand, so the greens look like real leaves and the petals glow with natural warmth.
