Olive Branch (Olea Europaea)

The olive branch extends across human history as perhaps the most potent symbol of peace ever known. For over 6,000 years, Olea europaea has been cultivated along the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean — its twisted, weathered trunks becoming living monuments to endurance, its precious oil illuminating temples and flavouring feasts, its leafy branches offered as gestures of reconciliation between enemies and nations. Some specimens in the groves of Crete, Palestine, and Lebanon are authenticated at over 2,000 years old, their hollowed trunks still producing fruit, connecting us directly to the classical world.

The olive’s symbolism of peace traces to the biblical story of Noah’s dove returning with an olive branch to signal the end of the flood — an image that endures on the United Nations flag, peace medals, and countless emblems worldwide. In ancient Greece, olive branches crowned Olympic victors and were woven into wreaths for distinguished citizens. Ambassadors carrying olive branches could travel safely even through enemy territory, the silvery leaves an inviolable passport of peaceful intentions.

Beyond symbolism, olive oil — liquid gold of the ancient world — served as food, lamp fuel, anointing oil, wound treatment, and food preservative. The cultivation of olives enabled permanent settlements throughout the Mediterranean, as communities could store the nutritious oil for years. The tree itself is superbly adapted: small, leathery, silver-scaled leaves reflect intense sunlight and minimise water loss, enabling survival on poor rocky soil through long hot summers. Olive trees grow slowly but live extraordinarily long, fruit production often improving for centuries.

In art and design, olive branches have decorated everything from ancient Greek pottery to Renaissance paintings to contemporary interiors. Their elegant, willowy form and distinctive silvery-green colouring make them perennial favourites. The olive’s associations with wisdom (Athena’s sacred tree), peace, prosperity, and endurance give it layers of meaning that resonate in homes, meditation spaces, and places of worship.
