Exhibizone runs Gardenia every year on the Biafarin exhibition platform, and 2026 marks the 4th edition of the show. The brief is broad on purpose: gardens, plants, herbs, forests, and flowers, real or imagined, in any two- or three-dimensional medium. What unites the selected work is not a single style but a shared attention to the botanical world, which is exactly the terrain a working illustrator already occupies.

Selected pieces run for two months in the online group show, then carry forward into an Artsy.net feature and a printed exhibition catalogue circulated to collectors, curators, and galleries. The Art Week listing places Gardenia 2026 alongside a full summer calendar of Biafarin-powered shows, one strand in a wider international circuit for nature-themed art.

Drawing an Ancient Bloom

Magnolias are one of the oldest flowering plant lineages still growing today. They evolved before bees existed, so their flowers were built for beetles instead: thick, tough tepals that could survive a chewing visitor, a bowl shape a clumsy insect could climb into, and colour muted toward white or blush because a beetle finds a flower by scent rather than sight. The Smithsonian Gardens’ account of magnolia botany notes that the flower’s carpels stay tough enough to resist beetle mandibles while the inner tepals close around the pollinator overnight.

None of that history is visible at a glance, but it explains why a magnolia reads as sturdier than a rose or an anemone on the page. The tepals carry their own structure rather than draping. Rendering that meant building up layers of opaque colour rather than the thin washes that work for a papery petal, and holding the shadow inside each tepal rather than letting it fall away at the edge.

Working from a specimen close up, the waxy sheen across the tepal surface became the other detail worth getting right. It is not a gloss added at the end but a property of the surface itself, and it shifts depending on where the bloom sits against the light.

The Gardenia selection follows a run of international placements through 2026, from the YICCA 2026 selection at Centro Culturale Milano to the dual Tokyo shows at Boji hair+gallery in March. Gardenia adds a different test again: a show built entirely around the botanical world, judged by people looking specifically for accuracy alongside atmosphere. A magnolia that reads as botanically correct and still holds a room is the goal every time, and Gardenia’s jury confirmed it once more.
